An Albanese Labor Government will bring regular ferry services to new parts of Hobart and the Derwent by funding a network of accessible, all weather floating jetties and ferry terminals along the river.

Since it’s beginning in August 2021, the Derwent Ferry service has been a runaway success, with over 60,000 passengers embarking on the commuter service between Bellerive and Hobart.

More than 10,000 passengers used the service during the Ashes Test alone.

An Albanese Labor Government will build on the success of this trial by investing $20 million and partnering with councils across the Hobart region to build a network of jetties and terminals at a range of locations along the river.

In the first instance, it is expected that new jetty and terminal locations will include Lindisfarne, Sandy Bay and Wilkinsons Point, as well as an upgrade to the Bellerive pier.

With bus services and active transport closely integrated with the terminals, this will play a key role in easing congestion and giving locals more choice in how they get around.

As the service continues to grow, more and more locations will come on board, including within Kingborough City Council and Brighton Council.

While the Morrison-Joyce Government focuses on headlines and empty infrastructure announcements, only an Albanese Labor Government will deliver the investments that Tasmanians really need.

Quotes attributable to Catherine King, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development

“Hobart is a river city and this investment will take full advantage of that.

“Not only will this give locals more choice in how they get home, it will in time become another icon of this beautiful city.

Quotes attributable to Andrew Giles, Shadow Minister for Cities and Urban Infrastructure

“Tasmanians deserve a better future than what they’re being served by Morrison.

Unlike the Liberals, we’ve been listening to local governments, and the people of Hobart.

We are interested in a real partnership to help this great city reach its full potential.

The team that Anthony Albanese leads understands how important it is for us to harvest natural infrastructure, like the Derwent River, in developing the Greater Hobart region.”

Quotes attributable to Julie Collins, Federal Member for Franklin

“Labor has a proud record of delivering projects that have benefited commuters in Greater Hobart including the Kingston Bypass, the Brighton Bypass and extensive upgrades to the Brooker Highway.

Today’s announcement will build on this record of delivery and underscores Labor’s commitment to Greater Hobart.”

Quotes attributable to Carol Brown, Senator for Tasmania

“Under Scott Morrison Greater Hobart has been left off the map and he has failed to deliver on his promises.

Construction on the Bridgewater Bridge still hasn't started and not one project has been identified for funding from the $25 million Hobart Congestion Fund first promised in 2019.”

Quotes attributable to Simon Davis, Labor Candidate for Clark

“One of the number issues raised with me speaking to residents is the lack of public transport options in Hobart.

Labor’s commitment is an investment in more affordable public transport and helping ease traffic congestion in Greater Hobart.”
